How To Set Up a DevOps Culture?

How can you have your employees behave as entrepreneurs and adopt a startup culture? DevOps is undoubtedly one way to do it.

An entrepreneur success often derives from three key aspects:

  • Passion for solving real problems

  • In-depth knowledge of the subject matter and insights into possible solutions

  • Strong bias to action, backed by sound decisions

Your company's structure and how you manage projects need to promote these values. The DevOps model creates an environment where all the team members feel like startup owners.

To drive passion, make sure people understand WHY they are building something. Set the right conditions. Then, have them interact with your customers, so they see the impact of their work.

Have everyone on the team act as product owners. Developers must understand the problem so they can provide valuable inputs on the product. They also need to grasp the business constraints if they are to engineer viable solutions. Educate your people on your business model and be transparent about key success metrics.

Finally, give your teams total freedom of action, both in capacity and authority. In exchange, ask for accountability by having them manage the production environment, their project budget, and deliverables.

Make your business everyone's business!
